'Over The Top' Christmassy comedy artwork design

'Over The Top' Christmassy comedy artwork design

This year’s annual alternative pantomime, Over The Top, is a heart-stopping, pun-filled adventure, overflowing with uplifting Christmassy comedy.

The year is 1918 and the troops on the Western Front have had a surprise visit from a fearless group of suffragettes who’ve come to perform a show to lift their spirits. But with bullets whizzing over their heads and howitzers shaking the ground, the troupe get stuck behind enemy lines and a rescue mission is needed. Hashtag #FirstWorldWarProblems.

Sergeant Beauty and a crack team of daredevils soon set off on the perilous journey to rescue them, but will any of them make it back to Blighty for Christmas?

Featuring an all-female cast, this show really is set in No Man’s Land. But fear not, these suffragettes definitely have our vote, and we’ll be rifling through the joke book to make sure the performance doesn’t tank.

If you’re looking for a fun-filled night out away from the kids this Christmas then look no further!

The Belgrade Theatre Coventry's brief was to design show branding and artwork that reflected the fun and humorous side to their Christmas production entitled Over The Top. We designed the show artwork to appeal to a fun loving audience, blurring the boundaries between classic Christmas and First World War imagery!

The finished design was translated into posters, outdoor advertising, flyers, banner stands and online website banners for social media.

See below how we created the final artwork by a montaging various images together.

Show artwork for the Belgrade Theatre's production of We’ll Live and Die in These Towns

Show artwork for the Belgrade Theatre's production of We’ll Live and Die in These Towns

"We’ll Live and Die in These Towns is a gritty and compelling new musical drama driven by the adrenaline-rush energy and working class poetry of songs from The Enemy’s number one debut album.

A young rock musician, Argy, sits on the cusp of the big time only to suffer a crisis of confidence hours before the biggest performance of his life in a huge homecoming concert.

His manager, unable to convince him to sing, sends him away to re-visit his past and decide his future. So Argy walks the streets of his hometown, visiting family and friends in a bid to make sense of his feelings and find a way forward.

Argy’s worked his whole life for this break. But now it’s here, can he face down his fears and seize the moment?

We’ll Live and Die in These Towns comes from the pen of acclaimed Coventry writer, Geoff Thompson and is directed by Hamish Glen. It’s designed by Patrick Connellan and The Enemy’s Tom Clarke is the show’s Musical Director."

Create Onsight were once again commissioned by the Belgrade Theatre to design, produce and supply artwork for their upcoming production of We’ll Live and Die in These Towns. As a home grown production the pressure to sell tickets is greater than ever, so it was of paramount importance that the design was pitched to the correct audience, muscial theatre lovers.

The artwork was translated to banner stands, flyers, posters, badges and outdoor advertising.

Read All About it! Artwork design for two exciting shows at the old Coventry Evening Telegraph building

Read All About it! Artwork design for two exciting shows at the old Coventry Evening Telegraph building

The iconic, 1950s Coventry Evening Telegraph building is a landmark. Its storeys are heavy with stories. The dusty air of the now abandoned newsroom is thick with them – flying from desk to desk soundtracked by the faint, staccato echo of long-silenced typewriters, dashing to deliver the day’s deadline copy.

Situated just over the road from the Belgrade Theatre – another hub for city storytelling – the Coventry Evening Telegraph building will soon enjoy a new lease of life as a beautiful hotel. But before that, for a brief moment in time, it will become a theatre.

This architectural gem will host two extraordinary, site-specific productions using drama, digital, puppetry and dance to explore the city’s rich history.

One show, City Final, sees the Belgrade Theatre youth and community groups take audiences on an exciting journey against a looming deadline, around the cavernous building and through the last 50 years of Coventry life. There are two different routes for this performance, Route A and Route B. If you are in a wheelchair or have other mobility or access needs we recommend you book for Route B which is on one level and more accessible. For more information about the different routes, visit the City Final show page.

While Mercurial Dance’s show, Retold, offers audiences a unique cabaret-style show inspired by their very own, personal memories. The action plays out in the Telegraph’s foyer where generations of people came to share their news with the paper.

Hold the presses, and become part of the story as you join us on this thrilling journey through time.

These performances are part of the Coventry Great Place project supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Coventry University, University of Warwick, Coventry City Council and Coventry Business Improvement District.

Create Onsight were commissioned by the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry to design and produce artwork for two shows, Retold and City Final. The brief was to create a design that would promote the theatrical dance aspect of the shows, but also promote the one off use of the unusual location, the old Coventry Telegraph building.

The typographic style within the title treatment is inspired directly from the original Coventry Telegraph Newspaper masthead, whilst the imagery of a falling performer was superimposed in Photoshop. Take a look below to see how we created the artwork from montaging various images together to create the desired effect.

The finished design was translated into posters, website banners, outdoor advertising, flyers, banner stands and lamp post banners.

Belgrade Theatre What's On Spring/Summer 2018 brochure design

Belgrade Theatre What's On Spring/Summer 2018 brochure design

The Belgrade Theatre was built in 1958 as part of the reconstruction of Coventry after World War II. Holding 858 in its two-tier main auditorium, and 250-300 in the flexible, new second space, B2, it remains one of the largest regional producing theatres in Britain.

The Belgrade acquired its name in recognition and thanks for a gift of timber from the Serbian capital city of Belgrade, that was used in the construction of the auditorium. The Belgrade soon became renowned for its programme of exciting new drama and early Company members at the Theatre included Trevor Nunn, Ian McKellen, John Gunter, Joan Plowright, Michael Crawford, Frank Finlay and Leonard Rossiter, with Arnold Wesker and David Turner among the new dramatists.

The Theatre remains the major arts and cultural facility in Coventry and the only building-based professional producing theatre company in the city. It aims to present a broad spectrum of excellent work and produces a wide range of shows.

Whats On Spring/Summer Season 2018

"As you can imagine, we’re absolutely thrilled with the news that Coventry has been awarded City of Culture 2021. It’s an incredible opportunity for the city, and we’re very much looking forward to playing a major part in the year’s events.

Speaking of exciting future events, this summer all of our community groups will come together to work on a large-scale production in the former Coventry Evening Telegraph building opposite the Theatre. The production will play alongside a show from Mercurial Dance, and I’m sure it will be a fantastic spectacle.

Elsewhere in the season we have the usual mix of drama, music, musicals and comedy. I hope there’s plenty in there for you to enjoy, whatever your taste, and I look forward to seeing you back at the Belgrade this spring."

Hamish Glen, Artistic Director, Belgrade Theatre

Create Onsight have been working with the Belgrade Theatre for the last 4 years designing everything from the lastest show artwork for use on posters, billboards, adverts and promotional items to internal branding for the Cafe, leaflets, banner stands and of course the twice yearly What's On brochure.

B2 Anniversary branding for the Belgrade Theatre

B2 Anniversary branding for the Belgrade Theatre

"This September we’re celebrating 10 years of our amazing second auditorium, B2.

We’ve staged some incredible drama in there over those 10 years, including legendary director Sir Trevor Nunn’s Scenes From A Marriage, Hamish Glen’s original production of Alan Pollock’s Coventry Blitz play One Night in November, and last season’s award-winning Made In India.

This autumn we have another set of shows that are sure to challenge, engage and excite. With its focus on new writing and rarely performed classics, you may not always recognise the shows’ titles in B2, but you can always trust they will be inspiring, challenging and affordable productions that stay with you long after the lights go down.

Whether you’re a B2 regular or you’re giving it a go for the first time, we are delighted to welcome you to one of the most creative theatre spaces in the UK."

Create Onsight designed and produced a 'B2 Season 10 Years' logo that was used across literature ranging from the main brochure to a dedicated flyer with specific up and coming shows in the auditorium.
